Character Design

Designing and building characters has been a hobby of mine since I was a kid.

I love experimenting with different styles and broadening my understanding of how shapes affect a character's  personality.

My character designing philosophy is that even the smallest detail can (and should, to the best of my ability) be molded to reinforce the personality of the character!

Target: X-Mas

2018-2019

As art director, my biggest job during the pre-production phase was designing all of the characters of the film.

My biggest challenge was possibly not the making the designs themselves, but understanding them enough to coach the animators to be able to draw them as well.

There are several things I would do differently in the future, but my biggest regret is not making more detailed references early on -- such as lip-sync guides and more pose sheets.

Unconventional Farming

2018

This project only had 2 proper characters, but as one of the focal points of the story were the characters' vehicles, I put an equal amount of effort into their designs as well, which was a new and difficult task for me.

For this project, we were expected to use an existing artist to inform the style of the pitch.  I chose to look at the style of Hanna-Barbera cartoons such as Yogi Bear, which was much more apparent in the backgrounds than the characters themselves.

The Captain's Crown

2017

This was another project where I was tasked to draw inspiration from an existing artist, although this time we were given them rather than choosing them ourselves.

The artist I was assigned was Hergé, the author of "The Adventures of Tintin."

Other Projects

A few of designs I've done for uni that aren't substantial enough for their own slideshow, but are worth showcasing regardless.

Personal Designs

2015-present

A few of the designs I've done for myself, just because I like doing it!

Fakémon

2018-present

Though this is technically personal work, it's been a big project that I've put a lot of heart into.

The idea here is that I try and design my own Pokémon, and try to make them as convincing as possible.

I've done a fair amount of research to pinpoint what makes a Pokémon look like a Pokémon, including trying to imitate the style of the guy who draws the official illustrations for every Pokémon, Ken Sugimori.

The way I see it, it's not a whole lot different than imitating Hergé's style for uni!
